Linea is the only 100% proven zkEVM rollup committed to full Ethereum equivalence, classified as a Type-2 zkEVM. Native Token
The LINEA token launched in September 2025 and serves primarily as a governance token for the Linea Association. Unlike many L2 networks, Linea uses ETH as its gas token, reinforcing Ethereum alignment. The network features an innovative dual-burn mechanism where 20% of fees burn ETH (supporting Ethereum's deflationary model) and 80% purchase and burn LINEA tokens. The token distribution mirrors ETH's genesis allocation with 85% dedicated to ecosystem growth.

Linea is built as "the Layer 2 network from first principles to strengthen Ethereum and the entire ETH economy." Its core mission extends beyond scaling to actively enhancing Ethereum's value proposition through innovative economic mechanisms. The network combines zkSNARK-based zero-knowledge proofs with full EVM equivalence, using lattice-based cryptography that's quantum-resistant. Linea's architecture features a recursive proof stack (Vortex → Arcane → PLONK compression) delivering 10x ZK proving performance versus general zkVMs. The design philosophy prioritizes Ethereum alignment over standalone optimization, making it the first L2 to contribute to ETH's deflationary supply through protocol-level burns while providing native staking yield on bridged ETH.
Historical Overview
Linea emerged from ConsenSys' four-year research initiative into zkEVM technology, beginning development in 2019. After releasing the zkEVM specification in 2022 and launching a successful public testnet in early 2023 (attracting 5.5 million wallets and 47 million transactions), the mainnet launched in July 2023. Since launch, Linea has become the fastest-growing zkEVM on Ethereum, processing over 230 million transactions and establishing partnerships with 420+ organizations.
